Afternoon Snacks

I am attempting to update the blog throughout the week.  A link is located at the top of the page.  Recent entries include some of my inspirations, and recent reads.  So if you are interested, check it out, and leave a comment.

I’m not exactly sure how the main character cut the watermelon in half without cutting the little man in two, so don’t ask.

Let me know what you think of this one.

    Very cool, daddio.

My favorite of your recent comics. Panels 7 & 8 struck me particularly. Some of your best use of gesturing/posturing. I also appreciated the use of noise. Wouldn’t mind seeing that more often, especially on your computer colored comics.

Ooh nice!! My grandfather somewhat resembles this grandfather, minus the mustache; but he’s always working in the garden too and gathering weird friends, in exchange for that!

  4. Chris Says:

Very nice! love the colouring technique, and the poses and linework on the old man are really great.

  5. The Great Joe Bivins Says:

It’s just like The Fly. Did that guy accidentally combine himself with a watermelon in a matter transportation accident?

  6. CharlesA Says:

Your comic is getting increasingly creepy. This one is particularly disturbing.

  7. Scott Says:

I’m glad everyone is enjoying this one.

  8. adam Says:

nice! why not cut other watermelon in half to find litter man

This makes me happy. You developed a character in the first seven panels, and surprised us with the last two. The noise was wonderful; it made the comic feel like a sarcastic version of Tintin.

I can’t really say I agree with others on the noise, I don’t like it. But besides all that, it was great!
However, why would anyone eat watermelon after a (thumb-size, I guess) tiny, naked man was laying in the watermelon?
    I certainly wouldn’t. (:

Only needed one panel, i liked it……but im not going to impregnate it.

This is great! The style of the artwork really adds to the humor, because it helps set up the fairy tale expectation and ripens the payload.

  13. Cavemonster Says:

This is so wonderfully drawn and paced.

I just have to say that the noise looks good until you realize what it is. Just use a scanned piece of sandpaper or something natural and you’ll get even more wonderful texture.

Keep up the amazing comicking Mt M

What I really appreciate about your work is the deeper symbolism it holds. On the surface this is just some weird-ass comic strip, but when you stop and consider the notion of symbolism, your work takes on quite a deep, philosophical nature.

For example, in this particular story, this tiny, naked man (Gerald) posesses so much symbolic power. He could represent the old man’s lost innocence, his subconscious mind, a forgotten memory or emotion, etc. And he finds him in such an unexpected place (not just amongst a watermelon patch but inside of a watermelon) just as our past memories sometimes resurface in unexpected places and ways. Yet what happens? As soon as he finds it again, it’s quickly taken away by a hawk (?), which can be a symbol of inevitable time, death, temporality, etc. Instead of lamenting this loss, the old man decides to sit and eat the watermelon, a metaphor for simply accepting what life brings. Memories come and go, regrets come and go, relationships come and go, yet by remaining detached and accepting whatever life brings our way we can enjoy the “watermelon” and be happy and peaceful in this world where the duality of happiness and distress is a constant reality.

Maybe I’m over-analyzing it and this isn’t even what Scott is intending, but the fact that his imagery is so symbolically loaded means it’s open to such personal interpretation and meaning. And this is what makes it so great.

By the way, I really like the grainy look of the colors.

PS - The first thing I thought when I read this was, “How did he cut the watermelon in half witout cutting that little guy in there?” I just pretended that maybe he surfaced up from the watermelon…but then that would mean the watermelon was gelatenous. Hmm. Yeah, I guess there’s no way to explain it…but then again there’s no way to explain a naked, little man inside of a watermelon in the first place! ;-)

[…] But I really think it’s its own strip though, as the humour in Mt. Moriah seems a lot more arbitrary and poignant. A great way to eat like an hour out of your life for whenever you’re […]
