The Memorial of Stan Lightning

I want to start with a couple of thanks.  First, thanks to Kevin from Simulated Comic Product for linking the site.  If you’ve never read his comics, then you are missing out on one of the cleverest written comics on the web.  So check it out.  And welcome new readers.  This last week’s update generated the most traffic this site has ever seen.  So thanks to all of you that shared it with others.

My goal was to make this week’s update  look like it was torn out of an old comic book.  Let me know what you think.  I’m not completely happy with the way the second panel ended up (especially the gal in the green costume), but overall I like the way it turned out.  I used a scan of a manila folder to create the weathered paper look.

Enjoy, and I hope everyone has a good week.

When i was reading this my first thought was that Kevin died….

fantastic as per the usual, but now that he’s been introduced i’m really going to need some backstory on that magnificent masked bear character from panel 2. is he in to jazzercize?

I think you did all right drawing everyone. I think maybe why you don’t like the girl in green you drew is because her shoulders look a bit wide, making her look–how can I put this–manly(?) I guess I could say.

And yes, it does look like an old comic book, and I love this style; I hope to see more in the future!
The fishy is my favourite character. (:

I notice a little cross on the eulogy/in the background panel with the urn. This offends me greatly because once a burning cross fell on my dad and soiled his good pants. Does the cross + mutant fish = symbolizim of the second cuming? I like when the woman superhero is reassuringly touching the shoulders of the male super hero, clearly stating that child birth is something magical. Zaaaaaap.

I always thought that carp were rather friendly, good-natured fish. But geez, give them a little power…

I think part of the problem may be that the woman seems well defined in her costume, but then her facial features are fuzzy. I like that she’s comforting Sky Cobra or whatever you imagine his name to be. I think she has a better silhouette when they’re scattering the ashes.

I think the idea of making it torn out of a comic book page is cool, and you may want to fade the colors a bit to match how they would look being on bumpy paper like that. The idea is great, and makes me wonder if any superhero comic ever had a hero die, and within minutes his death was the cause of some new menace.

Stan died young, poor guy. He looks cool in his portrait, kinda like he was caught when they were taking the picture instead of him posing for it. And the urn sheen is neat.

I wonder what Wonder Bear’s powers are :)

If I was ever going to revise this comic, I would definitely work on her grill. She looks like she got punched in the face with a truck. But she is in mourning, so I guess that could explain it. And I guess there is nothing wrong with being an ugly superhero; although I’ve never seen one.

If I had to speculate on “Wonder Bear’s” back story, I would say he was infused with super powers during a romantic encounter.

I’m glad everyone is enjoying this one.

Could this be Wonder Bear’s origin story?

I like that he has narrow glasses slits, like he uses them for adventures in the blinding white arctic tundra.

…it’s what he would have wanted.

[…] before I dive into the main piece.  For example, this page is what I used as a reference for The Memorial of Stan Lightning comic.  There isn’t a lot of detail to go off, because I usually know in my head what I want […]

I think this comic was perfect. Not one of the things anyone complained about (including the author) caught my eye. Instead, the whole effect of an old-time comic came off just right. I looked at the superheros and only thought about what their names might be. When I looked again at the woman, it still made sense that a super-gal might be super strong and have the build for it. My thought when I looked a her was, “Is her name Amazonia, or the Amazon?” This whole page was such a laugh, I sent it to friends and family with the comment “File this under `Oops!’”
